MEDIA RELEASE

COMPANY IN SPACE, AS PART OF INTERACT 2001 ASIA PACIFIC MULTIMEDIA FESTIVAL PRESENT CO3 - THE NEXT STARTLING STAGE IN CYBERNETIC PERFORMANCE ART.

CO3, a new landmark performance work by Melbourne based dance-technology team Company in Space, is an extraordinary merging of live cinema, animation, and dance performance facilitated by cutting edge technology.

Utilising a state-of-the-art motion-capture suit traditionally used by Hollywood animators, Company in Space present a dialogue between two dancers, one in Melbourne and the other in Florida, whose performance is captured in real time and projected as film. An animated storyboard created specially for the event adds another layer to the cinematic dimension of the performance.

CO3 is the only performance-based event at Interact 2001. Capturing the conflict between the organic and the cybernetic, CO3 features two living organisms who have given their consent to be interfaced with state of the art motion capture apparatus. Engaging in the same computer generated space in real time, the relationship between the cybernetic and the organism can only be described as distrust. A choice is looming, but which direction to take?

Company in Space is based in Melbourne, founded by co-directors John McCormick and Hellen Sky. The company has consistently pioneered applications of new technology to movement. Their provocative works create dialogues between our visual, aural and kinetic perceptions, and exist in a number of new media that includes live performance installations, video and interactive virtual spaces, and are accessible from anywhere in the world. In 2000 their ground breaking works Escape Velocity and Trial by Video were featured in international festivals such as the 'Dare to Dream' arts rave and performance exhibition in Hong Kong, 'New Moves New Territories Festival' in Glasgow, and the 'Dutch Electronic Art Festival' in Rotterdam. CO3 continues the brave new territory forged by their last performance, Incarnate, which opened the Digital Now 2001 Festival in Hong Kong.
