Call for Submissions: Sonic Arts text / image for a CD

Untitled Document

Call for Submissions:

Sonic Arts We would like to invite submissions for text/image to accompany the first of Sonic Arts Network's limited edition CDs, upon the theme of silence. The edition will be published in January 2004, curated by Nicolas Collins, a native New Yorker who studied composition with Alvin Lucier and worked with David Tudor. Collins is currently Chair of the Department of Sound at the Art Institute of Chicago and has invited various international experimental sound artists to submit recordings of "absences of sound, of not-quite-silence, for a very quiet homage to the unnoticed. As in the old roue's quip that "a drink before and a cigarette after are the three best things in life" - the most important actions of our lives often lie in the unspoken ellipse. Absence indeed makes the heart grow fonder, just as anticipation makes it beat faster. The idea of silence may be interpreted in a wide sense and can be approached from multiple perspectives - acoustical, visual, philosophical and personal. Contributors may wish to explore ideas of absence as a fullness, silence as a symbol of liberation/oppression, and the consequences of perceiving sound through physical metaphors of space. We encourage a diversity of styles and materials for selection.
The CD and its accompanying print materials will form part of a series of numbered, limited edition audio CDs, produced and distributed three times a year, with guest curators and specially commissioned packaging. Editions of 1000 will be distributed at January, June and September each year. These will be free to member subscribers of the Sonic Arts Network (for more information on membership visit www.sonicartsnetwork.org), reaching practitioners and listeners in all corners of the globe, with a limited number of issues released in selected outlets. No payment can be offered for submissions nor materials returned. Submissions should be sent to:
