Research Associate, Palpable Machines Group (Ref: RA/PM/Micole)

 

Media Lab Europe wishes to invite applications for a two-year Research Associate placement to participate in visionary and unconventional research under the supervision of world-class scientists.

 

The Palpable Machines group currently has an opening for a Research Associate with a background in Computer Science and an interest in Human Computer interaction, particularly haptic (touch) display applications and devices.

 

As a member of the Palpable Machines team, you will work alongside people from many different disciplines in a highly creative environment. Together with the group’s other members, you will be engaged in creative form and concept development for novel haptic display solutions and their integration into working demonstrations of new applications for touch.

 

In particular, you will be developing new applications for people with visual disabilities in collaboration with other institutions around Europe within the framework of The European Union project Micole (Multimodal collaboration environment for inclusion of visually impaired children). The work in the Micole project aims at developing a system that supports data exploration, communication and creativity in environments where visually impaired and sighted children can collaborate.

 

Candidate requirements:

 

  • A recent graduate with a degree in Computer Science
  • Some experience in hardware/electronic prototyping is also desirable, though not essential.
  • Some experience in applying user centred design principles and some knowledge of human factors/ergonomics/user evaluation techniques would be desirable.
  • Industrial research experience would be an advantage
  • Fluency in English is essential

 

 

In addition to the opportunity to work and learn in this unique and exciting environment, Media Lab Europe offers research associates an excellent support and benefits package. The position carries a stipend of EUR25,000 per annum.
