British Association for the Advancement of Science Festival

Untitled Document

Science City York welcomes the British Association for the Advancement of Science Festival, 9th - 15th September 2007

This programme will include performances of improvised and pre-composed music, workshops and talks in the ColourDome on St Sampson's Square, York daily from Sunday, 9 September to Saturday, 15 September, from 11am to 4pm. Admission £2 Adults; £1 children

Sun, 9 Sept - Ansuman Biswas performs SELF PORTRAIT. Linked up to computers via sensors on his body Ansuman controls the music by his body rhythms (heartbeat and brainwaves). A continuous four-hour event and an amazing feat of endurance exploring the power of the human body.

Mon, 10 Sept - SUPERLUMINAL by RICHARD DURRANT. Superluminal is a musical illustration of my interest in the strange world of quantum theory. I always feel exhilarated by the quantum view which seems to unite the mysteries of the physical and spiritual aspects of the universe under the heading: ‘Things that are definitely there but are still under investigation’. In other words, discount nothing. It’s all a mystery. It all has terrifying beauty. Richard’s new work is a seven movement piece for voice (Paul Austin Kelly), guitar, flute and electronics.

Tue, 11 Sept - COLOUR AND MUSIC I - with Colourscape artist Peter Jones. Book in to three talks during the day about colour, light and sound. Talks at 11am; 12.30 and 2pm. Discuss links in our perception of light and sound with Peter Jones and discuss new computer music with composer Lawrence Casserley. Between the talks there will be improvisations and performances of new flute and computer music.

Wed, 12 Sept - SCIENTISTS AND SAXOPHONISTS - Evan Parker and John Butcher
Two international saxophonists started their careers as scientists - Evan as a botanist; John as a physicist. They join forces with computer musician Lawrence Casserley to take the saxophone to new realms of sound.

Thu, 13 Sept - DISABLED STUDENTS AND COMPUTERS. Computer musician David Stevens has been working with disabled students from Applefield school. They perform their own music on special sensors and computer software. David Stevens and Michael Ormiston perform with them.

Fri, 14 Sept - COLOUR AND MUSIC II - composer Michael Ormiston and painter Catrin Webster explore links between music and colour. Book into workshops at 11am; 12.30 and 2pm - learn to create new harmonics with Mongolian Overtone Singing - paint images that appear in your brain from the amazing colours in ColourDome.

Sat, 15 Sept - BETWEEN THE NOTES - Rare Scale Ensemble explore the microtones in between the normal Western scales. New music with oboe, quarter-tone flute, bass clarinet and electronics. Ask questions in the breaks in the music.
