Trombonsis
for trombone tape and Live Electronics (MaxMsp).
Firstly,
Trombonsis approaches the typical idea of using music technology to
extend the sonorities of a solo instrument, but It goes beyond that
in the way both elements are related, (the instrument and its expanded
results). To explain that I included different 'scenes' where instrumental
and electronics have different roles.
Visual
elements are still very important in the process of creation.Secondly,
the work explores the immense possibilities of the trombone as a 'resonator'
which can be used to experiment with a variety of timbres and compositional
techniques.
The techniques implemented range from:
a) focusing - unfocusing musical elements
b) moving background - foreground their presence.
c) integrating -disintegrating each other.
The flow
and development of the music is inspired by several human microcosmic
phenomenas which are visualised as imaginary landscapes in the composers
mind. Images are represented as visual music scenes.
As an example of one of the microscopic landscapes that stimulated me
to write music we find the thrombosis. This phenomena can be describe
as clots that form in the deeper veins. It most often occur as a result
of poor or sluggish blood flow through the veins and/or increased the
stickiness of the blood, making it more likely to clot. <Can you
give an example of another microcosmic phenomena?>
Trombonsis was premiered? the at the 33rd RMA <give full title here,
not RMA> conference by Barrie Webb, whose input on technical issues
was invaluable. It was premiered and played in numerous occasions by
Paul Wilson and the Spanish trombonist Carlos Gil and broadcasted on
Radio Nacional de España.
